Prime Video Top 10 - Here are 3 worth watching

If you're looking for something new to watch on Amazon Prime Video this weekend, the streaming service's constantly published list of the top 10 most-watched movies is a great starting point. But don't assume that just because a film ranks high on this list that it is of high quality.

In fact, it is often quite the opposite. I track Prime Video's Top 10 daily, and it is not uncommon for skippable titles to make the rankings. For example, the current #1 ranking is 2021's Infinite, but the Mark Wahlberg sci-fi actioner holds an abysmal 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes (viewer ratings are only slightly higher at 34%).

So, to avoid wasting precious movie-viewing time with duds, we've picked out some gems from the current Prime Video top 10 films below. A final word: This article is based on the Amazon Prime Video Top 10 as of Friday, November 8 at 6 a.m. ET.

Adapted from the 2012 novel of the same name by Manel Loureiro, “Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End” is a zombie film set in Spain that follows protagonist Manel (Francisco Ortiz) as he fights off a horde of walking dead while trying to come to terms with his tragic past. In this apocalyptic thriller, a deadly infection known as the TSJ virus spreads across the planet, transforming the infected into aggressive and rabid zombie-like creatures.

Grieving the loss of his wife in a car accident, Manel ignores the local evacuation order and decides to stay home, taking only his grumpy cat with him. Starting a new life as a scavenger, Manel searches for food and supplies in the ruins, protecting himself with diving gear.

“The Patriot” is a historical epic set during the American Revolutionary War that largely ignores historical accuracy (I swear I am not pointing this out because I am British!) ), it's still a stirring war movie with a strong cast that includes Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, and Jason Isaacs, and plenty of drama.

Benjamin Martin (Gibson) is a widowed farmer who takes a pacifist stand based on his experiences in the French Indian War. When the Continental Army chooses to fight the British, he initially refuses to enlist, but when his eldest son Gabriel (Ledger) is captured by the enemy, Gibson is forced to join and eventually becomes a central figure in the war.

Dev Patel's directorial debut is a stylish revenge thriller on the level of “John Wick” and “The Raid”. Patel plays a young man who makes a meager living in an underground fighting ring. Known for his signature gorilla mask, the unnamed Kid hides a quiet rage that eventually boils over when he gets a chance to infiltrate the city's elite circle. After a childhood trauma sets him on a blood-soaked path of vengeance, the Kid is ready to settle his personal scores.

Packed with some of the best action sequences of the year, Monkey Man is an adrenaline-pumping, energetic action film. While the narrative is a bit middling, especially in the second act, and the slow development of the film is a concern, the combative carnage is enough to recommend the film. Also, Patel is a filmmaker to keep an eye on.
