Update: The new M4 MacBook Pro has been announced.
There is no doubt that Apple is working on the M4 MacBook Pro. We had already heard about the M4 Pro chip in the recently announced Mac mini, but what we didn't know until recently was the M4 Max chip, an even more powerful version of Apple's latest silicon.
Although there have been faint rumors, this leak comes from Apple and more or less confirms the existence of a high-end chip.
In a reply to Mark Garman, an X user noted that Apple had posted a few assets on its website that were described as “M4 Max”. Of course, Apple quickly removed it, but by the time the post was made, it was already too late to stop the spread (and speculation) about what the M4 Max might be separating from the already powerful M4 and M4 Pro chips.
“Given that the ‘M4 Max’ image assets now exist on the Apples website (and before that, did not when I last checked),” reads an X post from Charlie Joseph.
As one might expect from the name Max, this chip will likely be in the high-end models of the MacBook Pro, and will go a long way toward ensuring that the MacBook Pro remains one of the best laptops available. It would make sense for Apple to offer three chips in its high-end laptops, but we will have to wait for an official announcement to find out which chip will be installed where.
Hopefully, Apple will include at least 16GB of RAM in the 14-inch MacBook Pro, as it did in the Mac mini (and 16-inch Pro). Doing so would be a huge performance boost for this expensive laptop and would make it worthy of the Pro name.
