Bad News about Samsung's New Wearable Revealed in Galaxy Ring Disassembly

The Galaxy Ring seems to have an amazing cost-saving design that is at odds with the ring's design of being unrepairable

The Galaxy Ring was officially unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked event earlier this year and is a great little piece of kit However, there is one major problem with this ring This is shown in a recent report by iFixit To do so, the resin and plastic had to be melted and debris removed with a dental pick The internals were mostly as expected, but there was one surprising design

Interestingly, Samsung had connected the battery and inductive cord to the circuit board with a press connector Usually this is done to facilitate replacement of the battery on the ring, but the design of the ring made this impossible To save space, Samsung was expected to solder the coil to the logic board, as in the Oura Ring Generation 3 However, since the coil and board are made in different locations and then put together in a third location, it would be cheaper overall to use press connectors

The problems revealed in this teardown have to do with the fact that the Galaxy Ring, like many devices, has a lithium-ion battery While these batteries are easy to manufacture and can be charged for long periods of time, they have a limited lifespan and need to be replaced But as this teardown shows, the Galaxy Ring has no way to do that, which explains why companies like Oura do not include battery issues in their one-year warranties

While it may not be possible to repair the Galaxy Ring, it still offers great features for users: the Galaxy Ring is lightweight and comfortable to wear, but sizing is a bit of a pain, and the Galaxy Ring is not a “one size fits all” device Its greatest strengths, however, are its health management and sleep tracking features While it relies on the smartphone, it provides detailed insights into health and sleep patterns, helping to chart improvements and inform what needs to be worked on

While it is interesting to see inside the ring, the problem is that it is very difficult to disassemble the device; we hope the Galaxy Ring's battery lasts long enough for users to get the most out of it; for a comparison between the Galaxy Ring and its competitors, see Best 2024 Smart Rings
