It's been about a month since I decided to make the HP OmniBook X my laptop battery life champion And it has been beaten
HP's Snapdragon X Elite-powered notebook recorded an impressive 16 hours and 22 minutes of battery life in Tom's Guide's battery life test, easily beating the MacBook Air 13-inch M3 and MacBook Air 15-inch M3 by over an hour
This is a significant improvement over the Windows 7
This is an amazing feat for a Windows 11 laptop, and for a while we did not expect it to be surpassed However, we just reviewed another Windows laptop, the new Dell XPS 13 (2024), which lasted longer than any MacBook or consumer laptop we tested [It has a 134-inch (1,920 x 1,200) IPS non-touch display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite X1E-80-100 chip, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of SSD storage When we put this laptop through our battery test (loading web pages and playing videos at a screen brightness of 150 nits), the Dell XPS 13 had an average battery life of 19 hours and 41 minutes This surpasses the endurance of any consumer-grade laptop we have reviewed
The graph above compares the Dell XPS 13 to the best Windows laptops and best MacBooks we have tested and reviewed Rugged laptops are not included Let's now compare the Dell XPS 13 with other laptops powered by Snapdragon X Elite
The Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon X Elite chips that we tested before the Dell XPS 13 lasted the longest were the HP OmniBook X (16:22) and the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 (15:44) These results are impressive considering that many of the Windows laptops we battery tested averaged between 8 and 12 hours (with a few exceptions) And now we have a Windows laptop that lasts nearly 20 hours under our test conditions
Both MacBook Air M3 models lasted just over 15 hours, which is impressive; the Omnibook X and Surface Laptop 7 lasted longer, but neither could match the MacBook Pro 14-inch M3, which endured 17 hours 16 minutes Of course, the new Dell XPS 13 lasts nearly 25 hours longer than that
Note that the MacBook Pro 16-inch with the M2 Max chip was the longest-lasting laptop we previously reviewed, lasting 18 hours and 56 minutes While this MacBook is not a direct competitor to the Dell XPS 13, we wanted to use it as a reference to show the durability of Dell's machines
The MacBook with the M-series chip was the undisputed battery life champion in 2020 and beyond That is no longer the case, as Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chip is a serious competitor to Apple's notebooks with regard to durability We have a true arms race (pun very much intended) going on and we are the beneficiaries
Apple's MacBook may regain its status as the longest-lasting laptop with every first batch of M4-powered machines So far, no MacBook can match Dell's new XPS 13 in battery life
