OpenAI is finally rolling out a feature it began testing earlier this year that will allow ChatGPT to remember conversations across multiple messages rather than within a single chat
Available only to Plus plan subscribers, the memory has been upgraded from previous testing to alert users when the memory has been updated and to allow users easy access to the memory when updates occur
The purpose of the new feature is to make chat more useful not only within a single thread, but across multiple instances This is based on the existing default prompts
When conversing with ChatGPT, you can ask it to remember something or let it choose the details This information is stored for future reference in future conversations
Unlike the custom instructions launched late last year, you can provide specific information and response ideas to ChatGPT
The memory idea is that every time you tell the AI something important, the AI will remember that and can use it in multiple chats, as well as update the memory when you make changes
The more you use it, the better it gets Memory also helps you personalize ChatGPT to your needs and requirements This is useful if you are like me and prefer to have a new chat for each topic instead of continuing everything in one chat
Basically, it memorizes key bits of information and stores them so that they can be accessed in a new chat session You can then update that memory or delete the memory
For example, if you previously explained that you wanted to format your meeting notes so that the headings and action items are at the top, ChatGPT will remember that in the future
Or if you told the AI that you run a coffee shop, the AI will remember that information in the future and update its memory whenever new information is added, such as a new name or location
To tell ChatGPT to remember something specific, simply say "remember this," or let it choose the details it thinks are importantOpenAI says it has seen improvements over time
"It is also easier to access all memories when an update occurs," a spokesperson told Tom's Guide To access this, hover over "Memory updated" and click "Manage memories" to see everything ChatGPT has picked up from your conversation
Memory is available everywhere except Europe and Korea This is likely due to data governance rules in these regions If you have memory, it is very easy to manage past memory, but if you don't like the idea of memory, you can turn it off or try another chatbot
