The function of this iPhone15 may be Pro only

In recent days, rumors have been gathering that the iPhone 15 series will be the first generation to have access to the 6 GHz band that Wi-Fi 6E routers will open up

Unfortunately, this report may only be half true If the leaked internal documents prove legitimate, it appears that Wi-Fi 6E will be reserved exclusively for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra

As provided as a source by leaker Unknownz21 (opens in new tab) and shared by MacRumors (opens in new tab), the document shows a basic diagram of the smartphone with various antennas dotted around the frame

The document mentions the differences between the two upcoming devices, the D8x and D3y, and the D7x and D2y (presumably the current generation iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro) One of the parts with two antennas includes the label "WiFi 6e (D8x only)" and assuming this document is authentic, we can confirm that it is omitted for the regular iPhone 15

MacRumors reports, adding that the site has seen "additional documentation indicating that Wi-Fi 6E is a Pro-only feature"

If you don't happen to own a Wi-Fi 6E router, it's probably not much of a concern, but it is interesting in terms of how Apple views the Pro iPhone

In the past, the differences between the Pro and non-Pro models have been obvious enough for even the tech novice to see the benefits of paying a little more Consider the power (and physical number) of the camera, the more fluid screen, and the physical size of the Pro Max

This generation has proven a little too effective, with the Pro model frequently out of stock while the regular version languishes on shelves For the tech-obsessed, the reason seems obvious: The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus use last year's chips and don't have a lot of upgrades Frankly, you'd be better off procuring a refurbished iPhone 13 Pro, as I've written before

Apple is said to be considering a variety of options to rectify this imbalance this year The latest rumors suggest the introduction of Dynamic Island and a 48MP camera upgrade, and at least on the surface, the latter seems to be favored

As for the WiFi 6E? It is a concern that is nowhere near mainstream enough, and likely one that Apple could limit without anyone but hardcore users noticing It is worth noting that those hardcore users are definitely the ones who would be attracted to the Pro option anyway

Of course, this could all be a hoax, but Unknownz21 has a pretty strong track record, having obtained a copy of iOS 14 (opens in new tab) in 2020 ahead of its release

The leaker says the document is "just the tip of the iceberg," and MacRumors promises more iPhone 15 leaks, including full images, will follow in March, when the phone enters the engineering verification testing phase
