The size of the Samsung Galaxy S22 battery just flipped — and that could be bad news

A purported listing for the rumored Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus and Galaxy S22 Ultra seems to indicate that both models will have smaller batteries than the previous model

Found by MyFixGuide, the listings come courtesy of 3C Certification, a Chinese compliance service for electrical products, and supposedly indicate model numbers linked to the Galaxy S22 Plus and S22 Ultra and the capacity of the phone's battery pack It details

According to MyFixGuide sources, the model numbered EB-BS906ABY is said to match the Galaxy S22 Plus, indicating that the phone has a 4,370 mAh battery This is smaller than the 4,800 mAh battery pack in the Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus

Also, the model number EB-BS908ABY appears to be associated with the Galaxy S22 Ultra, indicating that this model may have a 4,855 mAh battery; like the Plus model, this battery is smaller than the 5,000 mAh battery in the Samsung smaller than the Galaxy S21 Ultra

The report of a smaller Galaxy S22 battery is not a big surprise, as we have already heard rumors that the S22 series will have a smaller display this time around So it makes sense that the battery will be smaller along with the screen

Is this bad news? A smaller battery could mean that more space will be given to upgraded features, such as the powerful graphics processor that is expected to be included in the Exynos 2200 Or leave room for improved camera hardware, which is likely to be included in the Galaxy S22

However, in battery life tests of the current Galaxy S21 phone, which included surfing the web on 5G until the phone shut off, the Galaxy S21 Ultra lasted a solid 11 hours 25 minutes This is good enough to rank it on our Best Smartphone Battery Life list However, the smaller battery, when combined with the phone's boost feature, could ruin one of the Samsung Ultra phone's impressive features

Comparatively the Galaxy S21 Plus managed 9 hours 41 minutes, which is not stellar That said, the Galaxy S22's battery pack is said to be smaller, which is not necessarily great news

But what Samsung takes away with one hand, it may give with the other, and that may be optimization If all Galaxy S22 models around the world are equipped with Samsung's own Exynos chipset instead of Qualcomm's, the company will have even greater control over efficiency And that optimization could take place at the silicon and software level, meaning smaller batteries would be compensated for But this is only our guess

The Galaxy S22 is expected to debut early next year But in the meantime, the rumors are endless about what will be in Samsung's next flagship We expect improved cameras, enhanced optical zoom on the telephoto camera, a possible under-display camera (we've already seen that feature on the Galaxy Z Fold 3), and possibly faster charging

It is not yet clear whether the Galaxy S22 will be a significant upgrade or evolution of the Galaxy S21 lineup While the Galaxy S21 phone ranked on our best phones list, we still want to see Samsung take some risks with the Galaxy S22 and push phone innovation forward into 2022
