PS5 Hack can bring us a step closer to a complete jailbreak

If what Fail0verflow claims turns out to be true, we may be one step closer to being able to jailbreak the PS5 The hacking group claims to have obtained the PS5 root key, which allows them to decrypt the console's firmware

As Eurogamer pointed out, Fail0verflow is the same group that successfully hacked into the PS3, PS4, and Nintendo Switch Therefore, it was only a matter of time before they turned their attention to the PS5

More interestingly, Twitter user @theflow0, aka Google security engineer Andy Nguyen, posted a screenshot showing the PS5 debug menu

As Wololonet points out, what is important here is that he managed to launch that menu on a retail console, not on a PS5 test kit

Nguyen said he has no plans to disclose how to access the debug menu, while Fail0verflow was waiting for Sony to patch the PS4 before disclosing the details of his hack So despite being fairly big news, these results may not go anywhere

The fact that it is possible to decrypt the PS5 firmware and access debug settings on the retail console means that we are another step closer to being able to jailbreak PS5 consoles

If it comes to fruition, we could see the development of hacks that would allow you to do things on the console that Sony doesn't want you to do Install Linux like the old PlayStation consoles, run emulators, pirate games, etc Given how powerful gaming consoles are, there is a lot that can be done if the right people are freed from the constraints of pre-installed software

But it will take some time before that actually happens Sony is no doubt doing its best to patch any exploits that might allow hackers to develop a complete jailbreak of the PS5 as well

Still, assuming the PS5 restocking shortage actually ends and people can actually pick up the console, it will be interesting to see what happens After all, jailbreaking is pointless if you don't have a system to run it on
