PSVR2 is reportedly on track for launch in 2022, and a full public release could take place soon

PSVR 2 appears to be well on its way to a 2022 launch

According to hardware analyst Brad Lynch, the virtual reality headset will soon go into mass production and Chinese manufacturer Goertek will be tasked with keeping enough inventory to meet demand (probably an impossible task) Lynch said production of the device will begin "shortly"

A headset in preparation for mass production would indicate that Sony plans a full public release in the near future After all, the headset design and specifications will likely leak once the hardware is in mass production, and Sony will obviously want to show off the headset before then

We currently don't know much about the follow-up to the original PSVR headset; there is no official confirmation of what it will even be called beyond the vague codename NGVR (short for next-generation virtual reality) However, there has been much speculation and some fascinating leaks over the past few months

Last month, it was reported that the PSVR 2 may feature OLED microdisplay technology This would allow the headset to offer 4K resolution, pixelation-free 3D images, and low latency This would be a significant improvement over the blurry, unfocused images of the original PSVR Sony confirmed the headset's specifications onstage at CES 2022, and we were very impressed

The design of the headset itself remains a mystery, but a patent discovered last November may give us a hint of what will actually be worn on the face at some point in 2022

Sony at least showed off its new PSVR 2 controller in an official capacity This orb-shaped controller appears to be a significant improvement over the PlayStation Move controller used in the current PSVR And this controller will reportedly offer some of the best features of the PS5 DualSense controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback

We have already compiled a list of things we would like to see in PSVR 2 One of the things we most want is for the setup process to be easier While the original PSVR was a nightmare of cables and breakout boxes, PSVR 2 has confirmed that it can be set up with a single cable Hopefully we won't have to wait too long before Sony fully lifts the lid on its next virtual reality device

Assuming the PSVR 2 launches this year, we expect it to quickly become one of the most difficult technology items to purchase thanks to the ongoing worldwide chip shortage We definitely don't look forward to scouring PSVR 2 inventory in the months following its launch
