If you purchased a physical copy of either game on a PS4 or Xbox Series X, simply load the disc on either a PS5 or Xbox Series X and you will receive a free upgrade to the next-generation console version Similarly, if you purchased a digital copy of the game on a current-gen console, you can download the upgraded version for free on the next-gen console Save data will be carried over Upgrades will only be available from PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to Xbox Series X, but that is to be expected given that the disc, download, and save data systems are all fully incompatible

There is one small drawback, however, and it has to do with the PS5 Digital Edition You see, this PS5 Digital Edition is not disclosed in the PS5 version, which requires a digital download in order to play Therefore, if you purchased "FIFA 21" or "Madden 21" as a PS4 disc, you cannot upgrade to the PS5 Digital Edition for free Without a disc drive, there is, after all, no way to verify ownership of the game

This is not a problem with the regular PS5 or the Xbox Series X, which has a disc drive This seems to be a rather niche case, and EA has given players plenty of warning Remember: the only way you won't get the free upgrade is if you purchased the PS4 disc and then the PS5 Digital Edition This problem can be alleviated by purchasing the digital edition of one of the games on the PS4 or by purchasing a regular PS5 when the console is released

If this is the case with FIFA and Madden, then other cross-gen titles will probably face the same drawback There seems to be no easy way to digitally verify ownership of a disc Fortunately, this should not be a major problem, as there are two extremely easy workarounds: buy a digital copy or get a standard PS5
