The PS5 launch lineup is disappointing — here's why

Update 9/18: Since the publication of this article, we have learned that "Sackboy: A Big Adventure" will be released on both PS5 and PS4 This means that "Astro Boy's Playroom" and "Destruction All-Stars" are the only PS5 launch titles that will not be released on other consoles

We now know almost everything we need to know about the PS5, including its price, release date, hardware specifications, and controller features Thanks to a helpful post from Sony, we also found out the PS5's first-party launch library And frankly, there's not much there

PS5 will launch with six exclusive titles, not a bad number at first glance But upon further inspection, one of them is pre-installed, two are remasters, one is a stand-alone expansion, and two are strictly the same game

This list comes from the official PlayStation Blog, which provided incredibly detailed and informative information as a follow-up to Sony's PS5 showcase on September 16 The post is extensive, discussing everything from release dates to system specs to accessories Of particular interest here, however, is the list of first-party titles for the PS5

According to Sony, the first-party titles available with the PS5 are:

At first glance, six first-party titles seems comparable to the PS4, which had seven first-party games at launch However, as with the PS4 launch library, many of these titles are not true next-gen exclusives Let's take a closer look

Astro's Playroom deserves little discussion, as it comes pre-installed on the PS5 No matter what the quality of the game is, there is no need to choose whether to buy it or not

Demon's Souls is a remastered PS3 version From the trailer, it appears to be a fairly major rework, with slightly different level design and combat; even if you wanted to play this game on PS3, the online servers were shut down years ago, so you won't get the full experience Still, "Demon's Souls" is an 11-year-old game that many people have played before, and the PS5 version hopes to provide a similar experience overall

Counting "Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales" and "Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition" as separate games almost feels like cheating The former is a standalone expansion to the PS4 version of Spider-Man, an all-new but perhaps somewhat smaller open-world adventure starring Miles Morales The latter is a remastered version of the PS4 version of Spider-Man with Miles Morales content

"Spider-Man" was a great game, and "Miles Morales" looks equally good so far However, neither game is a PS5 exclusive Spider-Man" is currently available on PS4, and "Myles Morales" will be available on PS4 as well as PS5 Of course, the games will look and perform better on PS5, but that alone is unlikely to be worth $400-500

Destruction All Stars and Sackboy: The only true first-party PS5 exclusives in the launch library are Destruction All Stars and Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and to be honest, nothing about either game is yet We don't know anything about either game yet It could be a genre-defining system seller, or it could be a launch title that no one will remember by the time PS6 is released given the past success of LittleBigPlanet, I have high hopes for "Sackboy," but I have no idea what "Destruction All Stars" will be immeasurable

Granted, there are many other titles that will be available at PS5 launch, including "Assassin's Creed Valhalla," "Fortnite," "Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition," and "Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War" Titles are available However, a comprehensive list of third-party launch titles has not been released at this time, and it may be another month or two before the full lineup is available

Since these games can be played on Xbox One, PS4, and PC, it is difficult to recommend a brand new system for these games While we can expect better performance from the PS5, we won't know how much better it will perform until we actually have it in our hands

In any case, if your mind is absolutely set, it's a good idea to try to pre-order a PS5 It's a bit chaotic right now, but hopefully the process will become a bit easier in the coming days and weeks Otherwise, it looks like there's nothing you absolutely have to play on day one - if you already own a PS4
