We know that Samsung has its own XR headset coming at some point in the next 12 months. But other than a few minor hardware details, like the fact that it will run on a Snapdragon XR Plus Gen 2 chip, the device remains a complete mystery. However, we may have our first look at what the headset's interface and apps will look like.
This glimpse comes directly from the Android XR developer blog, so this is not a leak itself; we know that Samsung's headset (aka Project Moohan) will work with Android XR, so this is a demonstration by Samsung itself Next best way to get an idea of what the headset will look like.
The blog post features a 6-second video showing a handful of app windows overlaid on the real world. The video is short, but it shows what the app windows look like when wearing an Android XR headset, which of course is not much different from the app windows on an Android tablet.
Android XR also gives users the option to switch between two modes, called Homespace and Full Space. Homespace is a multitasking display that shows multiple app windows, with what looks like a real-world surroundings in the background.
Full space, on the other hand, shows only one window at a time and a virtual background; HomeSpace is the default view, and the buttons essentially switch back and forth from full-screen mode.
Perhaps such a feature would also be available on Samsung headsets, but the actual design of the windows might be different. After all, Samsung's Galaxy phones run on Android, meaning that the One UI interface looks a bit different from other phones; there could be similar differences between the stock version of Android XR and Samsung's.
Google also confirmed that the Android XR will support multiple inputs including hand tracking, eye tracking, voice control, keyboard, mouse, and even a dedicated controller. Hand tracking will also allow gesture control, including pinch gestures similar to those already seen on the Apple Vision Pro and Apple Watch 9.
We expect to see more details on Project Moohan at CES 2025 starting January 7. So in the coming weeks, we should see more information about this headset and what Samsung has in store for us.
