Recent reports indicate that Apple may change the material of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max frames.
There have been quite a few rumors about the iPhone 17 series in recent weeks, including leaked specs and rough details about the phones. However, recent leaks suggest new design changes for the phone's Pro model, including changes like the Pixel 9 Pro. The Information stated in a recent article that Apple will construct the frame of the new phone in aluminum.
This change marks the first time in many years that the Pro model will use the same material as the base iPhone since the 2017 iPhone X used a stainless steel frame. Subsequently, this frame was not used in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which used titanium.
However, there are several advantages to using aluminum for the frame.
The report also states that Apple plans to discontinue the rear glass camera housing and instead opt for a larger rectangle constructed of aluminum. If that sounds familiar, that's because the design is similar to the Pixel 9 Pro.
As such, the back panel will reportedly be split, with half made of metal and half made of glass. If this is accurate, it would be for wireless charging, which is not possible with a completely metal back panel.
As noted above, we have heard various rumors and leaks regarding the iPhone 17. For example, recent information indicated that the iPhone 17 Pro model may feature an upgraded telephoto and selfie camera. Not only that, but the device is likely to feature an upgraded 3nm chipset, promising a significant performance boost over previous models.
Apple's use of the same aluminum frame across models is an interesting idea, but we won't know for sure until the official announcement. If Apple follows previous trends, the iPhone 17 series is expected to be announced around September 2025.
