Forget for a moment that the PS5 Pro is about to be released. Just for a moment.
If you've been following the rumors regarding the successor to the Nintendo Switch, you know that until recently, Spring 2025 was said to be the release date for the Switch 2.
While the release date may be up in the air, the release of Nintendo's latest financial report (h/t Eurogamer) indicates that the company still plans to announce a new console before the end of the year.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa reaffirmed during the financial results briefing following the announcement that the new console will be announced (in some form) by the end of March 2025.
However, nothing is known yet about the details of this mysterious new game console. We know nothing new about the machine itself, only that we will be able to see it within the next five months.
The big takeaway here is that we won't get an official glimpse of the Nintendo Switch 2 (or whatever the other console will be called) before the end of this year.
Now, I hope Nintendo proves me wrong and starts teasing the next console as soon as tomorrow, but there are still several Switch games on the horizon, including Mario and Luigi: Brotherhood and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, with impending Given the push for Black Friday and holiday sales, it feels unlikely that a reveal will happen until January.
This is an opinion shared by industry analysts like Hideki Yasuda of Toyo Securities. Reacting to the news (as reported by Reuters) that Nintendo-Switch sales fell short of estimates for the current fiscal year, he stated: “This year's announcement is becoming much more difficult.... You don't want to divert attention to upcoming game consoles in the middle of the important year-end sales season."
He added: ”We're going to have a lot more sales this year...We're going to have a lot more sales this year.
Nintendo continues to be as unpredictable as ever these days, so there is a good chance we could still be surprised with more news. I am sure I am not the only one who was surprised by the launch of the Nintendo Music app or the announcement of the bizarre Alarmo project.
Regardless, I'll continue to follow any Switch 2 news as it comes in. In the meantime, if you're looking for something new to play, the Nintendo Switch Black Friday deals are now available. Check out our roundup of the best Nintendo Switch games and find the next best thing you haven't played yet.
