Apple to Introduce 90Hz Displays on iMac, iPad Air, and Studio Display - Why Does It Matter?

An unnamed source contacted the popular Upgrade podcast hosted by Myke Hurley and Jason Snell (overheard by 9to5Mac) and claimed that Apple is working on a 90Hz display that may be included in future M3-powered iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display models. He claimed that Apple is working on a 90Hz display that may be included in future M3-powered iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display models.

The current Apple iMac M3, 13-inch iPad Air 2024, and 5K Studio Display have the available display refresh rate fixed at 60Hz. According to sources, the first 90Hz display will be on the future M3-equipped iPad Air. From there, it will migrate to the 24-inch iMac and Studio Display.

This is consistent with Apple's recent output that the newest iPads will be upgraded first, with Apple desktops and laptops coming later.

An anonymous source told Upgrade, “We have news about screen improvements for the next generation M3 iPad Air. Apple is working on a higher refresh rate LCD display with a new Liquid Motion panel fixed at about 90 Hz. They are also working on extensions to other models and products like the 24-inch iMac and next-generation studio displays.”

Apple just announced a new iMac with M4 at the end of October, which will be available on November 8. The device appears to rock a 60Hz refresh rate, but is more powerful. iMac M4 review will be brought to you later this week in Tom's Guide.

The upgraded Studio Display has not been widely rumored, and with the new iMac coming out this month, we probably won't see the next-generation monitor until late 2025, when Apple is expected to launch the M5-powered MacBook.

On the other hand, the devices have been criticized by device purists because they have not kept pace with the 120Hz variable speeds available on currently available Android and PCs. Nevertheless, next year's iPhone 17 series will reportedly feature a “ProMotion” display that supports a 120 Hz refresh rate.
