7 Movies to Watch After “Woman of the Hour

Netflix's latest original, “Woman of the Hour,” a true crime thriller that is stranger than fiction, has already garnered a great deal of buzz. We're big fans of the film here at Tom's Guide, and our colleague Rory Mellon called “Woman of the Hour” “one of the best films of the year.”

This chilling new film is the directorial debut of Anna Kendrick (lead) and focuses on the crimes of Rodney Alcala, played by Daniel Zovatto.

It's a confident, chilling crime thriller with a unique hook, but one that never loses sight of the fact that Alcala's victims were let down by the world and system around them.

If you've already streamed “Woman of the Hour” and are looking for another thriller to follow it up, we've compiled a list of movies to watch next.

2023's “The Boston Strangler,” a true-life drama directed and written by Matt Raskin, is the latest feature film based on the murders of 13 women in the Greater Boston area in the 1960s by a real-life killer-like figure.

Specifically, the film revolves around reporters Loretta McLaughlin (Keira Knightley) and Jean Cole (Carrie Coon), who continue to follow the case while the killer remains at large, challenging the sexism of the time and skepticism about the case, in Joe Berlinger's ” . extremely wicked, shockingly evil, and vile” film is an apt suggestion.

This 2019 Netflix film is based on Elizabeth Kendall's memoir, The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy, and is a story about Kendall, then Bundy's partner ( The film depicts the crimes of serial killer Ted Bundy through the eyes of Kendall (Lily Collins), Bundy's partner at the time. Although accused of tracing the surface of Bundy's crimes, and seeming a bit disjointed, “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” is worth watching for Efron's central performance alone.

Pon Joon-ho's “Memories of Murder” is a high-profile crime thriller based on the Hwaseong serial murders of the 1980s, which were the first serial murders in South Korea.

The film takes place in 1986, when detectives Park Do-man (Song Gang-ho) and Cho Young-gu (Kim Roi-ha) travel to rural Korea to investigate a double murder. Relying on their basic investigative skills, the two uncover the identity of a killer who continues to take more lives.

“Memories of Murder” is as well put together as the director's later, more widely known feature films (e.g., “Parasite”) and is undoubtedly the perfect follow-up for those looking for another true crime story.

As already noted, “Woman of the Hour” was Kendrick's directorial debut, and the 2003 crime drama “Monster” marked the same milestone for “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins. The similarities do not stop there, as “Monster” also revolves around the crimes of a serial killer.

Jenkins' film follows the life of sex worker Aileen “Lee” Unos (here played by Charlize Theron). After moving to Florida and having an affair with Selby Wall (Christina Ricci), Aileen kills seven clients between 1989 and 1990 and uses the money to support herself and Selby. As the body count mounts, Selby begins to suspect that Irene is responsible.

In a discussion with Letterboxd about “Woman of the Hour,” director Anna Kendrick said the Coen Brothers' 2007 neo-Western “probably had the most obvious influence on the film just by watching .”

“No Country for Old Men,” an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel of the same name, revolves around a group of characters united by a stash of missing money. The stash is first discovered (and stolen) by Llewellyn Moss (Josh Brolin) at the scene of a drug deal gone wrong. Moss is pursued by the brutal hitman Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), who is followed by the violent Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones).

David Fincher's “Zodiac” is about an unidentified man who stalked San Francisco Bay Area residents and played authorities with codes, phone calls, and coded messages sent to newspaper executives. The film depicts the investigation of the Zodiac Killer.

While “Zodiac” deals with a number of bloody crimes, it is more concerned with our obsession with actual crime and its gory details. Zodiac is an unsettling, lengthy, and gripping search for the dreaded boogeyman.

If you want to see a lighter Anna Kendrick film (one without a prolific serial killer), my wildcard suggestion is “A Simple Favor”. This film would be more lighthearted and enjoyable.

Directed by Paul Feig, this twisted caper follows Stephanie (Kendrick), a mild-mannered widow and mommy blogger who befriends Emily Nelson (Blake Lively), a high-flying local mother who works for a fashion company.

Stephanie babysits Emily while she and her husband Sean (Henry Golding) are away. Eventually, Stephanie sets out to find out what happened to her new friend. Soon she is sucked into a strange mystery that grows more and more maddening as she tries to get to the bottom of her new best friend's disappearance.
