Apple has released the first developer beta of iOS 18.2. One of them is ChatGPT integration with Siri.
iOS 18.2 allows users to ask questions to ChatGPT directly through Siri without the need to swap apps. Users can also ask ChatGPT to generate images via Siri, which uses ChatGPT's image generation tools rather than Apple's Visual playground. However, Apple Intelligence's integration of Open AI has been criticized in the past
regarding security and data privacy.
Thankfully, Apple has a complete view on how this integration handles user privacy and data. First, users have full control over when ChatGPT is used and what features can be accessed; ChatGPT is turned off by default and must be enabled for use with Siri, writing tools, and visual intelligence with camera control. It must be enabled. When enabled, requests are analyzed to determine if they explicitly request ChatGPT to process the request.
Even if the request does not specifically request ChatGPT, Siri will ask if you want to use ChatGPT if analysis of the request reveals potentially useful results. You can disable this in the settings while keeping the direct question option. This means that your request will only be delivered where you choose. Next, let's look at what data is collected.
The data sent depends on whether you have a ChatGPT account. If not, the only information sent is the request itself, the attached document, the content of the document, and the photo sent. There is no attached information linked to an Apple account, and the IP is masked. In addition to this, OpenAI cannot use the data to train its models, but your location will be shared to prevent fraud.
Having a linked account also means that you have access to some of ChatGPT's paid features through Siri and are subject to OpenAI's own data privacy policy. As such, Open AI may record your requests, attachments, and session history to help us train and improve our model. However, these data will not be linked to your Apple account. However, it is not only Open AI that collects data when you use ChatGPT; Apple collects limited information about your requests and ChatGPT responses. This includes the number of requests sent and responses received for the operation of the service and to prevent fraud. For more information.
Apple is committed to protecting its users' data, so it is good that everything is clearly stated so that users can use this feature with confidence.
