One of the darkest movies of all time is in Netflix's Top 10 - a wild ride of adrenaline in full swing

While Netflix hits like “Rebel Ridge” and flops like “Uglies” have garnered a lot of attention this month, the streaming service has a brutal bloodbath that shouldn't be missed, making its debut on the streaming service on September 23rd and quickly rising to the number two spot, “Evil Dead Rises” Evil Dead Rises,” the latest entry in the iconic Evil Dead franchise, is a film that will satisfy fans of bloody horror on all fronts [Directed by Lee Cronin, this horror film takes us from a secluded cabin in the woods to a claustrophobic high-rise apartment building, where nightmarish mayhem ensues It is, of course, not for the faint of heart The film is filled with gruesome body horror, unrelenting tension, and plenty of homage to the franchise's roots But before you turn away from this horror film, there are plenty of reasons to see it, especially with the Halloween season fast approaching

“Evil Dead Rises” is a worthy entry in the genre and is scarier than ever But is it worth watching on Netflix even if horror is not your thing? Here's what you need to know before diving into this thrilling journey

I watch a lot of horror movies (it's my favorite genre), but there are few that grab me these days Some lack proper scares, some lack characterization, and some completely ignore both But “Evil Dead Rises” surprised me and is one of the best horror films of 2023

“Evil Dead Rise” follows the reunion of estranged sisters Ellie and Beth (played brilliantly by Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan), and their reunion takes a terrifying turn when an ancient demonic force is unleashed in Ellie's high-rise apartment While Ellie is possessed, Beth must protect her sister's children and survive the terrifying battle for survival in the building's confined space The brutal gore and uncomfortable tension make for a heart-pounding frightening experience

Sutherland and Sullivan's performances are the heart of the film They elevate the film from a typical gore-fest to a gripping family drama Sutherland, who plays Ellie, the possessed mother, transforms with frightening ease from caring mother to terrifying evil force

Meanwhile, Sullivan anchors the film with a raw and relatable performance as the protective yet emotionally distant sister While the supporting cast does an excellent job of portraying a family in crisis, it is Ellie and Beth's relationship that propels the story forward

Without giving too much away about the action and plot, the opening scene of “Evil Deadrise” deserves special mention It is shocking and brutal and sets the tone for the film's relentless intensity Although not directly related to the main plot, it perfectly expresses the chaos and horror that awaits us ahead The bloody and shocking introduction gives us a good idea of what is in store Again, not for the scared, but still an unforgettable title sequence

If you just can't get over it, maybe the ratings will convince you Evil Dead Rise has an impressive 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 76% rating from audiences As Time Out's Hannah Flint says: “Not for the faint of heart, but for longtime fans and horror fanatics, just sit back and let the blood spill Donald Clark of The Irish Times also captured my sentiments perfectly: “A raging entertainment that captures the tone of the first two films while finding new veins to drain into a mess Evil Dead Rising is not as clearly comical as the earlier films, but Cronin never forgets that we're here for a bloody good time”

Despite being one of the grossest films of the past two years, “Evil Dead Rising” offers more than just blood-soaked thrills While the gore is undeniably standard, the film manages to weave a surprisingly emotional and suspense-driven narrative that will engage even the most fastidious viewer

At its core, “Evil Dead Rise” is a story about family, and the lengths to which people will go to protect those they love The tension between estranged sisters Ellie and Beth makes the characters feel human (something many horror films lack), and the stakes quickly become personal and real It is these emotions that make the film resonate with a wider audience

As someone who is not a big fan of excessive blood and gore myself, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this film This film does not attempt to shock you with mindless gore depictions that will make your stomach churn and rob you of sleep Instead, the emphasis is on building genuine suspense, and there are some truly chilling moments

If you're still on the fence about “Evil Dead Rises,” don't let the horror label scare you off It's full of buckets of fake blood, but it's also a genuinely heartfelt story about a family trying to survive the worst thing imaginable Horror fanatic or not, this is a thrilling experience for everyone
