Bad news, folks: the much-feared crackdown on Disney Plus password sharing has finally begun
CEO Bob Iger announced last month that the crackdown would begin “in earnest” in September, and the House of Mouse has squeaked out a start by the end of this month
In a new post on its corporate website, Disney revealed its approach to account sharing going forward Broadly, it is similar to Netflix's crackdown on password sharing, which began in earnest in the summer of 2023
Like Netflix, Disney intends that your account will be used between devices within your “household,” and those outside of that device's network will stream all the best Disney Plus shows and Disney Plus movies and have to pay their own subscription fee or become an “additional member” of the subscription (for an additional fee) in order to continue
Below you will find a complete breakdown of the new Disney Plus password sharing system, including how it works, the fees, and how to add an “Extra Member” to your account
Adding an Extra Member to your Disney Plus account is slightly cheaper than paying for a separate plan
Currently, it costs $699 per month to add an Extra Member to a Disney Plus Basic plan and $999 per month to add an Extra Member to Disney Plus Premium (By comparison, it normally costs $799/$1399/month to sign up for a standard account, and thanks to the October Disney Plus price increase, these rates are rising)
In the UK, adding an Extra Member costs £399 for Disney Plus Standard with Ads and £499 to add someone to either the Disney Plus Standard or Premium plans In Australia there is only one price for Extra members: $799 per month
A few things to note: Extra members can only stream Disney Plus content on one device at a time More importantly, there is currently only one Extra Member slot per Disney Plus account
It is also worth noting that the new Extra Member feature is not available to Disney Bundle subscribers or subscribers billed through partners at the time of this writing So if you are already subscribed this way, anyone outside of your household will have to bite the bullet and get their own Disney Plus subscription instead
After launching in “select markets” over the summer, the new Disney Plus password sharing feature is now available in the US, Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Europe, and Asia-Pacific
Anyone who is at least 18 years old, lives in the same country/region, and does not have a valid Hulu subscription or a valid or cancelled Disney Plus or ESPN Plus subscription is eligible to be set up as an Extra member under the new system
If you are an account holder and would like to add someone outside of your household as an Extra Member, you may invite the Extra Member to join Disney Plus Here are the steps, as detailed in the Disney Plus Help Center:
Simply put, as an account holder or member of a Disney Plus household, you can view Disney Plus while traveling on any supported device
If you open Disney Plus on your TV while away from home and get the message “This TV does not appear to be part of the household for this account,” and for some reason you need to reset your subscription household location, you can either “I am away from home” or “Household update”
Whichever option you choose, you will be prompted for a one-time passcode that will be sent to the email address associated with your account
Don't want to pay extra to keep your former freeloader friends on the Disney Plus plan Now, the only option is for other users to sign up for their own Disney Plus subscriptions
However, the process is not that painful If the account owner selects an existing Disney Plus profile, the invited extra member can carry over their viewing history and settings when setting up their own account
However, there are some exceptions: the account owner's Disney Plus profiles, underage profiles, and profiles that are set to junior mode on the platform cannot be carried over right now
