PlayStation 4 Pro owners will remember that games improved to take advantage of the superior hardware had a "PS4 Pro Enhanced" badge on the box This indicates a higher resolution on compatible TVs and a smoother frame rate on older HD models
It appears that Sony will do the same with the rumored upcoming PS5 Pro; Insider Gaming not only claims that Sony is preparing a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" label, but also reveals what games are required to be eligible for it
Called "Trinity Enhanced" internally, the site says that Sony ideally wants eligible games to offer three things: first, "always on 60fps" gameplay, which many games currently offer, but often with graphics only when the graphics are set to a weak "performance mode"
This is where the second and third points come in: it appears that to achieve PS5 Pro Enhanced status, games will need 4K resolution (achieved through PSSR upscaling) and "additional or increased ray tracing effects"
Alternatively, the site adds, the PS5 Pro Enhanced badge could also be awarded to games that simply increase resolution (variable or fixed) or frame rate over standard consoles
This alternative path to Enhanced status may be important for games that are already pushing the limits of console hardware Based on previously leaked specifications, hardware analysis site Digital Foundry doubts that the upcoming GTA 6 will reach 60fps on PS5 Pro hardware if the base version is at 30fps, for example
According to Digital Foundry, the bottleneck from the leaked specs is the CPU, which is the same as the one in the current PS5, but with a higher frequency mode for a 10% increase in clock speed
Elsewhere, more dramatic performance gains are rumored, including 45% faster rendering, up to 4x faster ray tracing performance, and an increase in memory speed from 448GB to 576GB
Current reports suggest a release later this year, with September and November as possibilities
