One of the best PlayStation games is being made into a movie - and it's not what you'd expect

Sony is in full swing with plans to turn many of its most beloved PlayStation franchises into movies and TV shows There is already an "Uncharted" movie adaptation, an "The Last of Us" HBO series, and film adaptations of "Horizon: Zero Dawn" and "God of War" are in the works And now we have learned which PlayStation game will be the next to be made into a live-action film

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that a film adaptation of the excellent PS4 horror game "Until Dawn" is in development, directed by David F Sandberg ("Shazam" and "Lights Out") and starring the likes of "It" and Annabelle: Creation" (also directed by Sandberg) and "The Nun," and screenwriter Gary Dauberman will rework the script by Blair Butler, writer of the vampire film "The Invitation"

Released in 2015, Until Dawn looks like an interactive slasher film The film controls eight young people who have gathered at a cabin deep in the mountains Once there, the friendship group is pursued by masked assailants and a deformed creature called a Wendigo

The hook of Until Dawn is that all characters live or die depending on the player's choices in a branching scenario Gameplay consists primarily of quick-time events and simple button controls, making it ideal for inexperienced players

Until Dawn is a natural for a film adaptation, and the game has a deliberately cinematic quality, focusing on a gripping story rather than deep gameplay Additionally, well-known actors, including Academy Award winners Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, and Megan Martin, provided voice acting and motion capture

Developed by British studio Supermassive Games, Until Dawn has received mostly positive reviews from critics, who rate it as one of the best horror games we'll play for years to come

The game is believed to have exceeded expected sales, but a sequel never materialized Instead, Supermassive produced The Dark Pictures Anthology and The Quarry

Until Dawn may not be the biggest IP Sony owns, but it is certainly the PlayStation game most suited for a big-screen adaptation No word yet on whether the film will maintain the same characters and plot as the original game, but with a writer and director in place, the film could go into production fairly quickly and more details may be announced soon
