How does Lenila Targaryen's story in Season 2 of "The House of the Dragon" differ from the book?

In the first season of the "Game of Thrones" prequel series, Rhaenyra Targaryen, the heroine of the House of Dragons and rightful heir to the Iron Throne, made a big impression thanks to strong performances by Millie Alcock as the young princess and Emma Darcy as the adult princess

The latter actress will take on the entirety of Rainira's story in "House of Dragons" Season 2, which will reportedly premiere on HBO in August 2024 (at least according to series star Matt (according to Smith)

However, as the Season 2 teaser trailer suggests, Rainira's trajectory next season will reportedly differ from that depicted in George RR Martin's historical book "Fire & Blood," on which the HBO fantasy drama is based

"House of Dragons," set about 200 years before "Game of Thrones," centers on the struggle for succession in the House of Targaryen in its heyday, the struggle between heir Rainira Targaryen and her half-brother Aegeon II (Tom Glyn-Carney) for the throne of her father Viserys I The story centers on the struggle between the heiress Lenira Targaryen and her half-brother Aegeon II (Tom Glynn-Kearney) over the throne of her father Viserys I

The final moments of the show's first season are when Rhaenyra (Darcy) is told that her young son Lucerys (Elliot Grifo) was horribly killed near the end of the storm by the dragon of her uncle Aemon Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell), who is allied with Aegon II After being informed, that civil war known as the "Dance of the Dragons" is definitely set in motion

"Maybe he was trying to scare Luke, but I don't think he ultimately intended to kill him," showrunner Ryan J Condal said of Aymond's actions on HBO's "Inside the Episode"

"But now he's done it and has to decide if he's going to own it on his journey back to King's Landing

If he does return to King's Landing, he will no doubt face the wrath of Lenila at some point The last we saw of her, she was defiantly staring straight into the camera in grief and anger over the death of her child And given that the first scene of the Season 2 teaser features Lenila tearfully gazing at the end of the storm, and the final scene features her fierce and fearless riding a fire-breathing dragon, it is clear that the queen's quest for revenge has only just begun

This is a bit different in character from the Lenira readers know from Martin's book; while Lenira remains an important figure in the action of Fire & Blood, on the page the royal family is much more passive, remaining in Dragonstone while the struggle for succession begins and the figure choosing to act as a figurehead on the page

However, from the sneak peek of "House of the Dragon" Season 2, it appears that the TV series is instead trying to reinforce the Black Queen's active participation in the conflict and make her a more pragmatic leader in the future
