OnePlus 12R Storage Not as Fast as Touted - What You Need to Know

OnePlus issued an apology on Monday (Feb 12), revealing that the OnePlus 12R will not ship with faster-than-expected storage

The OnePlus 12R will offer UFS 31 storage and not the promised UFS 40 storage; according to OnePlus' response, it mistakenly promised UFS 40 in its previous communication about the device, when in fact the device will offer faster, new storage technology They stated that they want to make it clear that they are not offering this newer, faster storage technology

"During the launch of the OnePlus 12R, we announced the Trinity Engine, a new software algorithm that will keep your phone's memory and storage running fast and smooth for years to come Due to a mistake, we had assumed that the storage enhanced by the Trinity Engine would be UFS 40 on some phones We can now confirm that the storage on all variations of the OnePlus 12R is enhanced by the Trinity Engine, but is actually UFS 31"

UFS 40 is the new standard for storage speed, enabling faster performance and an overall more engaging experience with the device In most cases, UFS 40 is available with large storage capacities of 256 GB or more And given that the OnePlus 12R offers either 128GB or 256GB of storage, depending on the model selected, it was somewhat surprising that the company chose the faster technology

It is unclear how OnePlus made this mix-up, and the company offered no explanation in its forum post Instead, the company noted that UFS 31 is available on its early flagship models, including the OnePlus 11, and that it "also performs very well when reading and writing to memory"

OnePlus also revealed that the OnePlus 12R will feature Trinity Engine technology

"The OnePlus 12R also continues to include all the new Trinity Engine features announced at launch, such as launching apps faster than ever and locking applications open for up to 72 hours, using UFS 31 storage that is fully tested," the company stated

In our OnePlus 12R review, reviewer Philip Michaels had no problems with the device's storage, even if it was not UFS 40 He noted its "spectacular battery life" and "strong Snapdragon performance" and said the $499 price tag was a welcome surprise

Still, the OnePlus 12R remains one of the best budget phones money can buy, and while UFS 40 may have affected the battery life of the OnePlus 12R, it is currently one of the best smartphone battery life remains the same In fact, in our custom battery benchmark test it reached over 18 hours and 42 minutes, surpassing most phones
