PS6 - Release date speculation and early rumors

It is almost certain that the PlayStation 6 (PS6) will not be released for several years However, interest in the PS6 is already growing as Sony executives have stated that the PS5 will enter the "late stages of its lifecycle" in the next few months

Let me quickly clarify one thing As of now, there are absolutely no firm details regarding the PS6 Sony has not officially announced the console, nor is its release technically guaranteed However, the continued success of the PS5 and the overall strength of the PlayStation brand means that a successor is inevitable It's not an "if" but a "when

Even though Sony is still focused on the PS5 and may be gearing up to launch the PS5 Pro, PS6 rumors are already gaining steam

For the past three generations, Sony has had a seven-year interval between consoles: the PS3 launched in 2006, the PS4 in 2013, and the PS5 in 2020

The last three Playstations were all released in November (in North America) This logically leads one to assume that PS6 will launch in November 2027, but there is reason to believe that this generation may last a bit longer than usual

First, the crossover period between PS4 and PS5 is longer Last year, some of the biggest games of 2023 were still available on both consoles, and if the rumored PS5 Pro is indeed coming in 2024, Sony may want to give the new version of the PS5 a relatively short 3+ year spotlight

All of the above is speculation based on historical trends, but there is one subplot regarding the PS6 release date that comes courtesy of Microsoft: according to documents filed by Sony when the FTC filed its complaint against Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the Japanese tech giant suggested that it did not plan to release a "next-generation PlayStation® console" until after 2027

Microsoft appears to share the same view, and in the same FTC court filing, the Xbox maker stated that the "expected start date" for the next generation console is 2028

There is always the possibility that Sony or Microsoft could blink first and decide to start the next generation of gaming hardware sooner For now, however, it is reasonable to assume (but not confirm) that the PS6 will appear in 2027 at the earliest

Many gamers are already dreaming of the power of the PS6, and while there are no solid facts to discuss on the matter, we already have the very first PS6 spec leaks from a source with a solid (but far from bulletproof) record

YouTuber Moore's Law is Dead claims that he knows with 100% certainty that Sony will continue its partnership with AMD to power the PS6 and PS5 Pro The tech enthusiast also speculates that the PS6 could support 4K games at 120 fps or 8K games at 60 fps

Another YouTube creator, RedGamingTech, also claims to have heard from a source that Sony will stick with AMD for its next console The same source suggested that Sony considered switching to a rival chip vendor like Nvidia,

but is sticking with AMD for several reasons, including easier backward compatibility and the strength of its existing partnerships with chipmakers

If these are accurate, they could be the juice scoop and would suggest that the PS6 will be quite powerful However, the idea that the PS6 can deliver 8K games at 60 fps seems a bit fanciful; the PS5 does not quite live up to its hype of 4K at 60 fps for most games, so it seems unlikely that the next PlayStation will make the leap further

Not surprisingly, since the PS6 console has not been revealed, no PS6 games currently in development have been confirmed

However, at a recent State of Play event, legendary developer and "Metal Gear Solid" series creator Hideo Kojima confirmed plans for a "next generation action spy game," announced under the working title "Physint"

Since Kojima is already working on "Death Stranding 2: On the Beach," scheduled to arrive on PS5 in 2025, and a horror game called "OD" with Xbox Game Studios, it is likely that Physint will not be seen again for several years

"On the Beach" is a full-blown horror game

By the time they begin full-scale development, the PS6 will likely be in the works Perhaps the very first glimpse of Physint may actually be the first announcement of a PS6 game

Other games in development that may not be ready until the PS6 arrives include "The Witcher 4" (codename: Polaris) and "Cyberpunk 2077" (codename Orion) sequels

As for the wish list of PS6 games, PS5 was launched with a remake of From Software's cult classic "Demon's Souls" Perhaps another From classic, Bloodborne, will be re-released to celebrate the launch of PS6
