AT&T apparently plans to offer a small credit to customers affected by the recent major outage
In a statement released Saturday night, AT&T again apologized for the issue and said that customers affected by the outage will receive a credit for "one day of average service charges"
AT&T clarified that this means a "$5 credit per account"As to who will receive this credit, AT&T stated that it is for small businesses and consumers most affected by the outage As to when this credit will occur, AT&T stated, "Customers will see the credit in 1-2 billing cycles, depending on the bill close date Most credits will be posted in the next billing cycle
AT&T's outage was one of the largest in recent memory, with customers across the country waking up early Thursday morning to find their phones disconnected, and it wasn't long before AT&T acknowledged there was a problem and announced that it was investigating However, it was not until 4 pm ET on the same Thursday that all customers' problems were finally resolved
Since then, the most pressing concern for many has been what ultimately caused the outage There were many rumors and even claims of a cyber attack; AT&T stubbornly insisted that the problem was due to a software flaw, and the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI came to the same conclusion
Whether this $5 credit will be enough to comfort customers is not known, and the full extent of the damage will not be known for some time But AT&T seems to be doing all it can Some may argue that $5 is not much for the potential loss of an entire day of business, but it is better than nothing We will keep an eye on this story as it may evolve
