Google has announced a new DJ mode for its MusicFX artificial intelligence
MusicFX was launched last December as part of the growing Google AI Test Kitchen, a way for users to interact with Google MusicLM AI models
The new DJ mode allows users to react in real time to changes, rather than generating a new sound each time, and to have more control over the sounds that are generated
Unlike other AI music tools like Suno, Cassette AI, and Adobe's Music GenAI Control, Google's DJ mode feels more like a performance tool than a complete song creation
Google has a lot of cool research, and MusicFX is one of the products built on that research; MusicFX is purely experimental and subject to change or discontinuation However, it is fun to use
The tool can generate music from a series of text prompts; MusicFX cannot generate songs with vocals and refuses requests to include tracks that mention the artist, but otherwise it is a great for video backtracks, music for games, or can generate great beats
Like ImageFX, Google's image generator experiment, it converts your text prompt into a series of chips Each chip is a drop-down menu made from your text prompt, offering choices to quickly adapt the generated song
DJ Mode flips it around and begins with specific instructions that you can use to create a tip, or live beat
DJ mode is exactly what you would expect, allowing you to create a real-time stream of music from text, or in this case by labeling clips and adding them to a feed
Real-time loop creation, but unlike MusicFX in general, you cannot download what you have created
Musical prompts can be manipulated by adjusting sliders to add or subtract specific sounds to the live mix
Each time you remove a prompt, add a new prompt, or change the amount of prompts in the mix, it will take a few seconds to be reflected in the live track
It can handle up to 10 prompts, which can be anything from specific instruments to genres and even emotions Songs can be created that reflect specific ideas, such as epic bass, country music, demotivated, etc
