Rumors that Apple might release a microLED Apple Watch Ultra have been circulating for several years But last week, from the supply chain, Apple unceremoniously canceled the project - at least for the time being But that may not be true
The news was initially reported by supplier OSRAM, with Ming-Chi Kuo claiming that the entire watch would be canceled "for the time being" However, both DigiTimes and ETNews reported that Apple is still committed to the microLED Apple Watch Ultra
The reason why OSRAM's LED chips are no longer being used is due to their poor performance, meaning that Apple has to choose another, with ETNews claiming that Apple may have already found an alternative supplier from Taiwan or China, DigiTimes claims that Taiwan's AU Optronics (AUO) and PlayNitride are the two leading candidates
AUO has reportedly begun mass production of microLED watch display panels, while PayNitride has already mass-produced the necessary chips; AUO is reportedly a "promising partner" due to its own microLED display advances
Kuo claims that microLED production costs are currently too high to be economical, but DigiTimes sources claim that the situation is still within expectations They state that everything will be fine if Apple is able to scale up production in the future, as always happens when pioneering new kinds of technology Nevertheless, it is not without hurdles to overcome
But just because there are hurdles doesn't mean that the issue will be canceled, just that it may not happen for a while; I've heard rumors that microLED wearables may not appear until 2026, so we'll see what Apple does in the next couple of years Maybe we will just have to wait and see what Apple does
We have long heard rumors that Apple has bold ambitions for microLED technology across its lineup, and there is no rule that says it has to debut with the Apple Watch Ultra In fact, The Elec reports that Apple may begin offering microLED displays in a future version of its Vision Pro headset given that microLEDs improve power efficiency and brightness, portable devices like the mixed reality headset is the perfect technology for portable devices such as mixed reality headsets
But until Apple actually announces something, we can't be entirely sure what's going on microLED It goes without saying that the Apple Watch Ultra is probably not dead, but that doesn't mean we should expect it to appear anytime soon
