Nintendo's next-generation hardware, currently unannounced, is commonly referred to as the Nintendo Switch 2 Ultimately, that is the most logical option, but a new leak via YouTube suggests it may launch under a different name

Earlier this week, a Reddit posted on the /r/Gaming subreddit suggested that a YouTube survey revealed the name of the follow-up to Nintendo's best-selling console, the Switch

The survey in question asked, "Which of these gaming products would you consider purchasing?" and the four options were "PlayStation 5," "Xbox Series X," "Switch Attach," and "None of the above"

Unsurprisingly, this led to much online speculation that a popular video-sharing website had inadvertently leaked the Switch 2's official name as Switch Attach

The image contained in the Reddit post soon appeared on X (formerly known as Twitter), where many gamers weighed in on the expected name (spoiler: most did not support Attach)

However, this YouTube survey, while seemingly legitimate, should not be taken as concrete evidence that Nintendo's next console will be called Switch Attach

A Reddit user named "zachtheperson" claims that YouTube regularly adds "made-up suggestions" to its surveys Several other users have also claimed to have seen surveys with "fake" products in them, confirming this So this leak should be taken very seriously

I am not convinced by this latest Nintendo Switch 2 leak and I highly doubt Nintendo will name their next console "Attach"

As a colleague pointed out, the name Attach is reminiscent of an add-on, something that attaches to something else, rather than a completely standalone product So it would be an odd choice for Nintendo's next-generation hardware

Worse yet, a name like Switch Attach could lead to a situation similar to the Wii/Wii U, where many people mistakenly thought the Wii U was just a tablet accessory for the Wii, rather than a completely new platform Switch Attach also could cause similar confusion

At the very least, I hope that this rumored name will keep the Switch name After all, the Switch brand is very powerful The designation has permeated pop culture over the past seven years and is now synonymous with gaming As such, it would be unwise to abandon it after only one generation of gaming consoles

The Nintendo Switch has passed what I call the "mom test"! In my opinion, it is imperative that Nintendo keep the Switch name, no matter what they call their next console However, I contend that a name like Switch Attach could muddy the waters, and the most obvious choice, Nintendo Switch 2, would make the distinction very clear

For now, we can only hope that Nintendo makes a final public statement about its next product in the near future The latest Nintendo Switch 2 rumors suggest that the console could be announced as early as this month, but recent reports that the launch has been pushed back to 2025 may have changed this plan
