Samsung Display's next OLED screen is the future of laptops and tablets

Samsung Display has unveiled two innovative OLED screens that at first glance look like the future of laptops and tablets

The first is the new Rollable Flex OLED display, which expands from a 19" (49mm) long scroll shape to a 10" (254mm) screen, and the second is an OLED display that can recognize fingerprints anywhere on the screen

The OLEDs deployed are relatively self-explanatory, and we have seen both one of this scale announced by TCL at CES 2021 and a larger scale one announced by LG's "R-Series Rollable OLED" Nevertheless, it is interesting to see Samsung Display continue to innovate in formats that may be used in future Samsung Galaxy Fold phones

Positioning Sensor OLED Display is a bit more difficult While it clearly has unique features not found in other OLED screens, it seems to make more sense to use it in a doctor's office than in a living room

Remember, these are not products that are ready to be introduced to the world yet, but rather serve as prototypes that other manufacturers, such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Sony, etc can implement using Samsung's technology

Samsung Display brought both panels to the Society for Information Display (SID) Week conference currently being held in Los Angeles to demonstrate this new panel technology

According to Samsung Display, these panels are designed with new technologies that have not been used elsewhere For example, the Sensor OLED display uses light-sensing organic photodiodes (OPDs) instead of traditional sensors, making every location on the display a capacitive touch panel When touched, the display can accurately measure biometric information such as heart rate, blood pressure, and stress levels

Because OLED displays are inherently flexible, Rollable Flex can be rolled up when not in use Even more interesting is the Flex In & Out display, which can be folded inward or outward using the same principle Conventional foldable phones can only be folded in one direction, but this display will change that

It remains to be seen when these products will be seen in homes and offices, but the fact that they were unveiled in LA suggests that they may be seen sooner rather than later
