Samsung Galaxy S23 price leaks for Europe - and that's bad news

The Samsung Galaxy S23 is only a week away, and we still don't know how much Samsung intends to charge for the new model But there is growing evidence that, at least in some parts of the world, we will be paying more for this year's model

The latest piece of the pricing puzzle comes from Leaker and Roland Quandt (open in new tab), who share prices from Spanish retailers From the looks of it, the Galaxy S23 will cost between €110 and €160 more than the Galaxy S22's debut price, depending on the model

Specifically, Quandt lists the base model Galaxy S23 as starting at €959 for a version with 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM This is higher than the Galaxy S22's starting price of €849 announced a year ago; the Galaxy S23 Ultra could also see a price jump from the previous model, rumored to start at €1,409; the S22 Ultra started at €1,249

The biggest price hike from last year's model could involve the Galaxy S23 Plus, with Quandt pricing the Galaxy S23 Plus at EUR 1,209 The Galaxy S22 Plus was $1,049 when it debuted

Keep in mind that these rumored prices are based on information from Spanish retailers In a subsequent tweet (open in new tab), Quandt stated that Germany and Benelux countries may have different pricing In these regions, Quandt said, the base Galaxy S23 might cost €949 and the Galaxy S23 Ultra €1,399

All of this serves as a reminder of how tricky it can be to finalize pricing prior to a phone's debut Handset makers adjust handset prices in different countries based on currency fluctuations and local taxes For example, when the iPhone 14 launched last year, the price in the US was left unchanged from the equivalent iPhone 13 model However, the price in Europe increased as Apple took into account the depreciation of the euro against the US dollar

Put another way, even if the Galaxy S23's leaked price in Spain proves to be accurate, it does not necessarily mean that Samsung's new phone as a whole will increase in price

This may explain the various rumors we have heard so far about the Galaxy S23's price An earlier leak predicted a $100 price increase for the Galaxy S23 in Australia, while another leak suggested that only the Galaxy S23 Ultra would see a price increase

More recently, a spec sheet allegedly leaked from Verizon listed the same Galaxy S23 series prices that Samsung charged for the Galaxy S22 This has raised hopes that US shoppers may be able to avoid a price increase for the Galaxy S23

The rumored Galaxy S23 versus Galaxy S22 changes suggest a modest update to this year's phones, highlighted by an upgraded processor that should improve performance as well as power efficiency The Galaxy S23 Ultra is expected to see the most notable changes, including an improved main camera with a rumored 200MP sensor

We will find out what Samsung has planned for this year's phone on February 1, when the Galaxy Unpacked launch event begins, and just as importantly, what it is going to charge Check out our guide on how to watch Galaxy Unpacked so you can keep up with all of Samsung's announcements
