A can't-miss software update is coming to the Apple Watch Based on the latest watchOS 74 public beta, new features are coming soon that will make all models from Apple Watch Series 3 to Apple Watch Series 6 more useful
watchOS 74 will allow users to use their Apple Watch to authenticate Face ID on their iPhone when wearing a face mask This opt-in feature will work similarly to the existing Apple Watch authentication for certain Mac computers
While I am still waiting for an iPhone with an in-screen fingerprint scanner (iPhone 13?), the ability to verify identity with the Apple Watch should come in handy in an era when most people still wear face covers
This tool would be especially useful for faster contactless checkouts using Apple Pay I'm sure I'm not the only one sick and tired of having to choose "pay with passcode" at the grocery store checkout
For unlocking with the Apple Watch to work, the Apple Watch and the accompanying iPhone must be running the latest software version Both devices must be password protected, which is also a requirement for using the Apple Pay feature on either device individually
In the iPhone FaceID and Passcode settings, with the Apple Watch unlocked, toggle the "Unlock with Apple Watch" option on iPhone may ask for the passcode to be entered for confirmation, but thereafter Apple Watch should be able to swipe up to unlock it
Once the iPhone is unlocked using the Apple Watch, a notification will appear and tactile feedback will be felt on the wrist
In addition to unlocking with the Apple Watch, watchOS 74 now supports the Apple Fitness Plus update, allowing workout sessions to be cast to AirPlay-equipped devices This means you can keep up with the class without an Apple TV However, the workout must be initiated from an iPhone or iPad
Finally, Apple Watch users who update to watchOS 74 will see more emoji, the option to change their default music service, and more software enhancements found in iOS 145
