A hidden new feature included in iOS 136, released in mid-July, gives users more control over software updates for their iPhones and iPads

As reported by ZDNet, iOS users can now choose to run software updates automatically or download and install updates later at their convenience

Previously, Apple offered a single "auto update" option that automatically downloaded and installed updates However, in iOS 136, this has been changed to "Customize Automatic Updates," which splits the update into two steps: one to download the update and one to install it

Finding this new feature is very easy: simply open "Settings" on your iOS device, go to "General" and click on "Software Update" and you should be able to access the aforementioned options

Select "Customize automatic updates" and you will see new options for "Download iOS updates" and "Install iOS updates"

These options sound very similar, but serve different purposes The first option downloads the update automatically and allows you to manually install it at a convenient time

If Apple releases a new update but you do not have time to go through the installation and restart process, you can choose a more appropriate time

On the other hand, if you choose the second option, the iPhone will install the update on its own overnight, regardless of whether the update was downloaded automatically or manually The iPhone must be charged at that time

If you want the update to be installed without any input from the user, you can turn on both of these options, just as you did with the previous "automatic update" feature

Both options require a Wi-Fi connection
