Pre-orders for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S began today, with the addition of the new Xbox Wireless Controller

The new controllers will be available on November 10, when the new consoles go on sale, in a rather attractive new two-tone shock blue color The deep, dark blue is complemented by a black D-pad and ABXY buttons, while the back features a bright white In addition to this new shade, the controller is available in the Carbon Black and Robot White variants we have already seen

The new Xbox wireless controller is an evolution over the previous model, unlike the PS5's DualSense controller, which differs dramatically in design from the DualShock 4 This is not a bad thing, as the Xbox wireless controller has often been considered one of the best controllers available

Another menu button has been added and the D-pad has a new design, but otherwise the new Xbox Wireless Controller is very similar to its successor However, the battery is a bit disappointing

Microsoft offers a rechargeable battery pack, but this is not something that comes with the controller by default, but is either a $25 accessory or part of the Xbox Wireless Controller bundle This means that AA alkaline batteries must be inserted into the controller, which is not the most environmentally friendly controller in the world, nor is it particularly modern for the year 2020 This is a strange move, given that Microsoft seems to be focusing on the design and functionality of the Xbox Series X and Series S

There is also a PC bundle available that includes a plug-in wireless adapter to allow this controller to be used with PC games, or to connect to a PC via Bluetooth connection The latest Xbox wireless controllers can also be used with the Xbox One, even if you are not ready to upgrade

In a way, we wanted Microsoft to push the envelope with the new next-generation Xbox wireless controller However, the familiar design will be comfortable for some dedicated Xbox fans, and the adage "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" seems very appropriate here
