The PS5 and Xbox Series X are becoming capable of delivering amazingly immersive 4K gaming at high frame rates But what about those who want to upgrade but don't necessarily want to go 4K?
Thankfully, the PS5 has now been confirmed to support 1440p displays
Unlike the Xbox One X, which supported 1440p resolution, the PS4 Pro could only handle 4K or 1080p This is especially true because most PS4 Pro titles were capped at 1440p resolution It was also quite frustrating for those who chose to upgrade to a lower-cost 1440p display rather than jump straight to 4K
This time, the news comes not from Sony itself, but from a PC monitor manufacturer This news comes from PC monitor maker BenQ, which revealed 1440p support in a blog post However, BenQ later updated this post and removed any specific reference to this feature, so it is possible that the company spoke quickly or is still waiting for Sony to reveal this information
If this upgrade does happen, gamers with 1440p displays will be able to enjoy PS5 games at better quality than 1080p, and may even have some additional benefits Gamers often have to choose between resolution and frame rate, and while both the PS5 and Xbox Series X can handle 4K and 120fps, it is rare that a game can achieve both at once
Some games cannot achieve full 4K 120fps or even 4K 60fps Therefore, if silky smooth high frame rates are important to you, you will need to drop the resolution to accommodate them; 1440p support means you don't have to drop that far and (theoretically) can enjoy a balance between resolution and frame rate It will be interesting to see how that holds up with ray tracing, as at least one PS5 game (Watch Dogs Legion) has already been found to run at only 30 fps when 4K and ray tracing are turned on
In other words, if you have a 1440p display and plan to buy a PS5, you don't necessarily need to buy a new screen Or, if you need a new screen but not enough to buy a 4K display, don't forget to check out our Black Friday Sale TVs and Monitors There's no need to wait for your console to arrive, as it's already started
